You can greatly enhance your Sims game with Sim Community downloads. With all of the different creations that Sims fans have made for the game, the possibilities really are endless! For links to some great sites, visit my links section!
Most Sims Community websites compress their downloads in zip files to save precious space & speed up download times. In order to use the files, you need to "extract" them, which requires a program called Winzip.
Download the program & follow these step-by-step instructions & you'll be good to go!
- Double click on the zip file that you want to install.
- A window will open that displays all of the files included in the zip file.
- If there is a readme or text file in the zip, double click on it & read it. It may contain important installation information.
- Highlight the files that you want to install. (Readme or text files shouldn't be installed.)
- Click the "EXTRACT" button.
- After you click the "EXTRACT" button, a new window will open. Towards the middle of the screen, there will be a scroll box marked "FOLDERS/DRIVES" that shows all of the different directories on your computer. You need to find the folder that The Sims is installed in. Double clicking on a folder will cause the folder to open so you can view the files or folders that are inside. The default installation directory for The Sims is: C:/Program Files/Maxis/The Sims.
- After you find the right directory, click "EXTRACT" again, and PRESTO... you're done. Easy, huh?

It's important to install files to their proper directories. If they are installed improperly, they may cause trouble with your game or simply not show up. Here are the proper directories that you should install files in:
- Extract all skin .bmp, .cmx and .skin files to: The Sims\GameData\Skins
- Extract all .wll files to: The Sims\GameData\Walls
- Extract all .flr files to: The Sims\GameData\Floors
- Extract all roof .bmp files to: The Sims\GameData\Roofs
- Extract all .iff files to: The Sims\Downloads
I am totally addicted to Sim downloads! I have well over 7,000 downloaded .iff files, so to make sorting & categorizing them easier, I created 80 different folders inside my Downloads folder. I sort the files by themes like: Windows & Doors, Little Girls, Asian Restaurant, Bathroom, etc. You can manage yours however is easiest for you!

If you still have questions or would like more in-depth information, please put a post in the Site Problems section in the Forum so I know what information the site is still lacking.
I would also recommend visiting Sandy's installation help section at Around the Sims. She has a lot of great step by step instructions!
